Diuretics for weight loss are used in situations where you need to quickly get rid of several kilograms. They are most popular among athletes (boxers, weightlifters) who do not have time to enter their weight category for competitions, and bodybuilders to reduce the amount of subcutaneous fluid (giving additional relief to the muscles). The diuretic effect of drugs is often used to relieve swelling of the face and limbs.
Diuretics
The action of most medicinal diuretics is based on inhibition of the reabsorption of water and salts in the renal tubules while simultaneously increasing the rate of urine formation. As a result, there is a decrease in the amount of fluid in the tissues and serous areas, which is accompanied by a rapid decrease in body weight.
The true purpose of diuretics is to combat high blood pressure, heart, liver and kidney diseases. However, today the use of diuretics for weight loss is becoming increasingly popular. Lazy men and women who do not want to eat right and lead an active lifestyle can lose up to 2-3 kg in 1 day with the help of pills.
List and classification of drugs that have a diuretic effect:
Group of drugs | Description, contraindications |
---|---|
Thiazide diuretics | Thiazide and thiazide-like diuretics of moderate strength are very popular due to their high effectiveness and relatively few side effects. Thiazide drugs are contraindicated in people with hypersensitivity to sulfonamides, patients with diabetes mellitus, chronic renal failure (creatinine clearance less than 30 ml/min), severe liver failure, refractory hypokalemia, hypercalcemia and hyponatremia. These medications should not be used by women during pregnancy (except the 1st trimester), during lactation and children under 3 years of age. |
Loop diuretics | Typically, these drugs are taken either orally on an empty stomach (in which case their absorption is about 65%) or intramuscularly/intravenously (in this application, absorption reaches 95%). The mechanism of action of loop diuretics is based on relaxation of vascular smooth muscle and increased renal blood flow. Contraindications for use are anuria, allergies to drugs of the sulfonamide group, hypovolemia |
Osmotic diuretics | Their action is based on an increase in osmotic pressure in the blood plasma, as a result of which water begins to be extracted from edematous tissues. As a result of an increase in blood volume, active urination begins. Osmotic diuretics are contraindicated in heart failure (since the increase in blood volume increases the load on the heart) and in anuria, since normal renal function is necessary for the release of these substances |
The use of medicinal diuretics for weight loss is not recommended. The quick aesthetic effect is not justified by the damage to health that diuretics can cause. In addition, it should be borne in mind that weight loss while taking these medications occurs due to a decrease in the volume of fluid in the body. The fat stays in place!
Food
You can lose weight at home without harm to your health by using the diuretic effect of certain foods. They have no side effects or contraindications and can be used without a doctor’s prescription.
Diuretic products used for weight loss:
- Fruits: melon, watermelon, gooseberry.
- Vegetables: beets, parsley, green peas, onions, garlic.
- Spices: chili pepper, dill, cinnamon.

For those losing weight, as well as for swelling of the face and legs, it is recommended to reduce the amount of fast carbohydrates (sweets, flour) in the diet as much as possible. This food retains water in the body and increases body weight. Large amounts of sodium chloride added to food also lead to swelling. The daily dosage of salt should be reduced to 2. 5 g.
For weight loss, it is effective to use the diuretic properties of ginger. It can be brewed as tea or added to dishes. But the most effective is an infusion from the root of the plant:
- To prepare it, you need to finely chop 200 g of the product, put the pulp in a liter glass jar and pour 500 ml of boiling water into it.
- After cooling and straining, the drug is ready for use.
- Take 100 ml three times a day before meals.
